Gratitude- Twice, Buried Alive on 9/11/2001- An American Hero
Today I was at the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb event in San Diego. It is an inspiring and patriotic charity event that benefits the families of fallen firefighters. As we began the event, a choir sang the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Many had their hands over their hearts as is our tradition. But when the national anthem was over, the choir sang a second song, “God Bless America.” I found it interesting that the pictured firefighter, who I did not know, continued to have his hand over his heart during this second song as well, so I captured the moment.
Minutes later, this seasoned firefighter was introduced to the large crowd as Lt. Joe Torrillo, a hero from 9-11. As he tried to save others that fateful day, he was buried alive when the South Tower collapsed. When rescued from the rubble 20 minutes later, he was noted to have serious injuries. He was put on a boat on the Hudson river, bound for the hospital. And then the North Tower collapsed and he was again buried alive. 40 minutes later, he was rescued a second time.
His message today was moving- helping all of us remember the fallen heroes of 9-11 and helping us recognize the greatness of this country, The United States of America. I am thankful for the brave men and women that protect us.
